May the 4th Be With You!

Happy Day! It's May the 4th! If we were in school, I would have some fun Star Wars bookmarks for you.  Since we are not, I thought I would give you the chance to draw some of your favorite Star Wars characters.  I bought these awesome directed drawing instructions from "The Book Wrangler."  He does an amazing job creating a variety of directed drawings. That is how we drew the Love Monster back in February.  If you would like to try drawing some fun Star Wars characters, just click on the link below to start drawing.  Don't just stop there, I want to see these works of art! Please email me a picture of your creation, or you could leave a comment below.  Thanks & May the Force (or 4th) Be With You!!

I have removed the link to this.  If you still would like to draw, send me an email and I will send you a copy.  Thanks!

Happy Earth Day!

I love this picture drawn by one of my favorite authors/illustrators, Peter Reynolds! His message is that we should always be thinking about our earth.  We should do all we can to take care of our earth every day of the year.  Today we celebrate 50 years of Earth Day Celebrations.  I wanted to share a site with you from Discovery Education.  Check out their website for some fun activities you can do to celebrate Earth Day.  There are even virtual field trips you can go on! Check it out! It's awesome! Comment below and let me know what activities you chose!

Can You Make a Prediction?!?

Hi! How are my library friends? I am thinking about you.  As I was putting books on the shelf today, I remembered this new book we got right before we had to go to distance learning.  This book called "Spencer's New Pet" by Jessie Sima is an amazing lesson on predictions! You will never guess what happens in this story.  The other very cool thing about this book is there are only a few words! The story is told in pictures! I love it and I want to share it with you! I was given permission by the author and publisher to read this book to you.  Enjoy! After you watch, comment below and let me know if you made the right prediction.

Autism Awareness Day!

Today is Autism Awareness Day.  If we were in school, we would be celebrating all the ways we as a Forbes Family fit together.  We all have our differences yet we make a great team.  I am so blessed to be able to work at a school that has amazing Small Group classes.  I love teaching their classes! They are pure joy.  This book is amazing, and perfect for this day.  If you don't watch any other video on this blog, watch this one.  The way it is written is perfect in showing how we all fit together.  We all have our differences, but we have amazing gifts at the same time.  Please watch the video in the link and comment below with what you think of it.  Thanks for watching! Hey my Forbes Kids! Have I told you how much I miss you? Here is what I have for you today.  I am sorry I haven't gotten March Madness posted.  I have been helping Ms. Jana move her office and that took a bit.  I will get it done so you can vote in our Final 4!

I want to hear from you! It is simple to do.  You will see our brick wall, and all you have to do is click on the plus icon on the bottom right and it will pop up a box.  You can add pictures, or just type in what you are reading.  I can't wait to see who posts first.  If you are the first post, I will send you a prize! I'm Bored!

How many times have you said, "I'm bored" since we have been distance learning?  I was in the library cleaning up shelves and putting books away and came across this book.  It made me wonder how many of my students are feeling a little bored.  I thought I might tell you this story for a funny read today.  Take a look at the video below.  After you watch, get up and do some of the cool things kids do to not be boring! Reply to this post and tell me what you did.  I would love to hear! Thanks for watching and checking out the blog!

Online Library Bingo!

Today, I have a fun activity for you! Of course, I want you guys to be reading while you are doing your distance learning, so I have created a Bingo game to make it a bit more fun.  All you have to do is click on the link below.  You will see different ways you can read, and also links to videos to help you navigate some online learning websites like Worldbook and Sora.  Here is the great part! If you get blackout on your bingo card, and complete all the activities, I will deliver a prize to your home!  If you don't feel comfortable with that, you can wait and redeem your prize when we come back to school.  Have fun finding new ways to read and learning new things about all our awesome online resources.  I like the idea of you getting off your screens for a bit to do a craft or make a fortune teller.  Have fun with it! Share this with your classmates that might not get on here, too, and maybe you could have a competition to see who can get blackout first!
When you complete your bingo card, email me at kchavez@alpinedistrict.org and I will get you your prize! Click the link below to get started.

P.S. Thank you to my library friend Mrs. Allen for giving me this great idea!

It's Gonna Be Ok!

I love that Peter Reynold drew this for the times we are facing right now.  My Forbes kids, if you are feeling scared or lonely or just out of sorts, I want you to remember that we are here for you.  We are all in this together and we can be here to support each other.  Last week was supposed to be Hope Week at school.  We had a lot of fun activities planned to help you feel loved.  Ms. Jana found a song by the Piano Guys that we were going to play during lunchtime.  It is perfect for our situation right now.  It's Gonna Be Ok! I know this is hard, and sometimes frustrating, but it's gonna be ok.  Please reach out if you need anything! Here is a link to the song.  I think it is great to listen to and think of all your teachers and friends at school who are thinking about you and loving you!
Just click on the link below and listen to the message!

Storyline Online is Awesome!

Hi Kids! It's day 4 and I am missing you guys so much! I thought I would highlight something that is already here on our blog in the links to the left.  Storyline Online is an awesome website where celebrities read aloud picture books.  There are so many great books on here! I mean what is better than having a celebrity read you a book?  You better all be saying, "Mrs. Chavez is better!"  Haha! Check this out and look for the book called "Harry and the Dirty Dog."  You know how much I like dog books, and this one is read by Betty White.  I think you will love it.  Please remember that I am always here for you.  You can call me or email me with any questions or if you need any help with any of your school work.  I am here for you! Now go check out Storyline Online!

Sora Update! This is Great!!

Hey Friends,
I wanted to let you know that Sora is offering about 90 books available for check-out that allow unlimited readers.  This means we can have as many kids reading these books at one time as we want.  This is good news because it will help with being able to get books to read and not having to wait for holds! If you missed the video emailed by Mr. Proctor on how to use Sora, just click here.
Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if there is anything I can help you with.

Scholastic At Home Learning Extensions

Good Evening my favorite Forbes Kids!
I wanted to share this great offering from Scholastic to encourage learning extensions at home.  They have offered this educational website for free to all students.  I am placing the link here.  If you scroll down a bit to "Choose a Grade Level," you will have access to a story, an activity, and a video for each lesson.  What a great gift from Scholastic! I hope you have fun exploring what is on here.  When we get back to school, I want to hear all about what you learned!

Good Night Patriots!

March Madness Has a Whole New Meaning!

I can't believe this! Oh, how I miss you guys! I hope you are doing well in your homes and getting started on a new adventure of online learning.  This will be fun! I am planning to update the library blog daily so you can still feel like you are going to library.  I will be reading books to you, doing book talks, and adding cool things I find to share to enrich your learning.  I hope, just like at school, that this can be a good spot for you to come to feel loved, relaxed, and happy.  Today's post is about March Madness...our book tournament, not the crazy coronavirus.  I am really trying hard to get the necessary permission to read the books to you via video.  I have some authors who have given permission and some publishers that have not.  This will not stop me! I will be making loom videos to present the books.  Look for a Google Form (survey) after the books are presented to cast your votes.  This is how we will determine our book of the year for lower and upper grades. Make sure you vote (that's your library homework!)  I will send out the first videos next week.  I don't want to overwhelm your parents or you right now.  Thanks for being so great you guys! I can't wait until we can all be together again, but for now...Keep Reading!

What Do You Want to Figure Out This Year

Remember when we read this book.  I told you all you were babies who were coming to earth for the first time.  Good thing you guys have been around for awhile and have figured out some things in your 5-12 years of life.  I hope this year you will think about all the things that you want to learn and reach for those goals.  I love that this book sparked your interest in learning more about space and the earth.  I hope you know I am here to help you with anything you want to learn this year.  It's going to be a great 2020 in the library!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back my friends! I always love a fresh new year.  I am excited for the things happening in the library in 2020.  We have fun and educational centers that will be implemented and you can participate in the centers by working your hardest during your target times.  Are you working on reading?  Make sure you are counting all the books you are completing so we can count them towards Patriot Reading.  We want Mr. Proctor to sleep on the roof!! The prize wheel is being updated with even more rewards if your class reads the most books for the month.  Keep Reading!!  I can't wait to see all my favorite Forbes Readers on Monday!
