I can't wait to get back to school and tell you about the books I have read over the break.  I just finished "Refugee" and it was so intense and so good.  I'll add it to our book talks.  If you are reading this and have memorized your student ID number, come recite it to me and I will give you a treat.  I hope you guys have been reading fun books and I hope you have a fun New Years holiday! Here's to 2018 and lots and lots of new books to read!

Accidental Inventions

This week in library we are reading this fabulous book called "The Marvelous Thing that Came from a Spring" by Gilbert Ford.  You can find this book in our library in the non-fiction section (920). This book is about the accidental invention of the Slinky.  I loved playing with a slinky when I was younger.  I even love it now!  I guess I never really grew up! Haha!  I think you will love the book.  It also makes me think about what other things were invented by accident.  You can click here and read about other accidental inventions.  I learned something new and I hope you will too!  This could be another fun idea for the research challenge...just an idea!

Thanksgiving...Parade Style

This is a little hint of what we will be reading this week in library.  It is Thanksgiving time and what says Thanksgiving Day more than the tradition of the Macy's Day Parade.  We will be learning some fun behind the scenes details of how this parade came about and who invented these amazing balloons.  I hope this coming Thanksgiving morning you will watch a little of the parade so you can see these huge balloons in action.  The book we will be reading is called "Balloons Over Broadway".  It has been in our library for a long time.  I think it is a hidden gem that needs to be recognized.  This will be an exciting week in the Forbes Library!

HOW DO YOU FEED A ZOO?!?

This week in library we are reading "Worms for Breakfast" by Helaine Becker.  I am amazed at how awesome non-fiction books are written and illustrated these days.  When I was a kid, I always thought they were so boring because it was just words and small pictures.  This book is so much fun because the pictures are funny and there are so many little nooks and crannies to read and learn from.  My eyes are hopping all over the pages! I have had several of you ask for the delicious recipe for "Diggers Delight".  Wasn't it funny to see our teachers be brave and try this yucky looking chimp food?  We have the best teachers! If you want to make this delectable treat, here's the recipe:

Digger's Delight

1 ripe banana, smashed
1 cup cooked oatmeal, cooled
1/3 cup peanut butter
1 Tbsp honey
1/3 cup Hawaiian Punch or other fruit punch

1. Mix first four ingredients together.
2. Add Hawaiian Punch a spoonful at a time until it reaches a paste consistency
3. Spoon the mixture into a bamboo stick or lock it in a box.  Allow it to harden.  Chimps will enjoy trying to dig out the tasty treat using their fingers or other sticks all day.

YUM! YUM!

Challenge: Be a Book Worm this Year!

This week in library we got to look around at all the fun treats & I was happy to see that MOST kids really do think that READING IS A TREAT!  I think our Forbes students were a little disappointed that most all of the treats in the library were fake.  I hope you guys all forgave me when I fed you a gummy worm as you were checking out your books!  Let this be proof that every student that ate a gummy worm promised to be a book worm this year!  I found this cool Wonderopolis on book worms.  Click Here to read all about it.  Remember...it's always cool to WONDER!

Happy Summer!! Are You Reading?

Hey My Favorites! Look what just came out today! The Land of Stories 6! It's the last in the series.  If you haven't read a book this summer, start this series! It is awesome.  I read the first one a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.  These books are so quick paced that if you struggle to get into a book, this could be a great choice for you.  Boys, if you are thinking this is a girly fairy tale book, you are wrong.  These books are full of adventure.  I miss all of you and am working hard on library things this summer thinking about all of you.  Keep Reading and I will see you in almost a month!

"CHEWS" to Read This Summer!!

This week in library we are learning about the invention of bubble gum and how bubble gum could get you in some trouble if you don't follow the rules!  Check out the book Pop! The Invention of Bubblegum by Meghan McCarthy and Trouble Gum by Matthew Cordell.  Here's a secret, we might be chewing gum in the library while we listen to the story.  Don't tell Miss Jones. :)

Along with these great books, I want you to remember to read this summer.  I want you to CHEWS to read so that you don't lose any of your progress from the school year.  So, if you have some free time this summer, before you grab the TV remote or the XBox controller, CHEWS to read!! I promise, the more you read, the better you will get, and the more you will love reading.

Here is a graphic about reading 20 minutes a day:

HAPPY READING!

Do you want to make a cool movie or presentation?

March Madness has started this week in the library. To introduce the books to the upper grades, I used a presentation website called PowToon.  It was a lot of fun to prepare the video and I thought you guys might like to try it out if you have a presentation to do for school.  You do have to sign up for an account, but it is free.  Of course, you can upgrade your account for a cost, but quite honestly, I found everything I needed with the free version.  You can spend hours playing around with the fun backgrounds and pictures.  Check it out!

And You Think it's Hard to Come to School!

Check out this video of children in China who live on a remote mountain top village.  Kids as young as 6 years old climb this ladder every day to go to school.  The ladder climb is a half a mile straight up.  It takes the students 90 minutes to get to school.  So, next time you don't want to climb out of bed to go to school, think of these dedicated kids in China.

STEAM in the Library

This week we have been reading the book Whopper Cake by Karma Wilson.  We talked about how we use chemistry every day when we make dinner, bake a treat, or even make mac & cheese!  If you didn't get a chance to hear Whopper Cake, you'll have to check it out of our library.  For those of you who would like to try a super fun "experiment" making INVISIBLE INK, check out this link!

Make sure you ask an adult before you start.  Have fun & remember, you use chemistry in so many things you do each day, so keep on the lookout!

P.S. If you make a Whopper Cake, make sure you share some with me! :)

Too Much Glue!!

This week in library 1st, 2nd, & 3rd graders  have been reading Too Much Glue.  We then learned how to make our own glue.  I told you I would post the glue making directions on our blog, so here you go!

7 TBSP of non-fat (skim) milk - remember you cannot use fat milk
1 TBSP of vinegar

Let the mixture sit & you can watch it form the solids.  Take a paper towel to absorb the liquid, and the solids that remain are the glue.
Have Fun!!

I MISS YOU GUYS!

We have been on Winter Break too long!  I hope you have been reading lots.  I have wanted to read someone a book so much, I forced my dog Newman to listen to me.  You can tell he is not completely listening.  We have lots of fun things coming up in library!  Our Patriot Reading Party is this month!  We are getting close to the Super Bowl.  I wonder who the teams will be this year.  I have done a lot of reading over the break and am excited to tell you all about the books.  Enjoy your last day tomorrow and I will see you on Tuesday!  Happy New Year!!

P.S. Remember...December Patriot Reading Bookmarks are due on Friday, January 6th! Don't forget to turn it in!!
